What makes culture in Hannover so special?
I think what’s so special about Hannover is its fully developed cultural structure. There is this big, public sponsor for the fine arts, and then there is the free community. And I also believe that we often forget the migrant communities who offer a lot of culture themselves, like Kargah. die auch selber Kultur schaffen. It is very remarkable to have such institutions.
What are the cultural scene’s challenges in Hannover?
There is not much space, especially for young people, to start something new. Another challenge is easily facilitating financial support above 5,000 Euros. We, for example, work on an honorary basis, and that is a privilege. Not many people can do that. We have the financial resources to do this, but there should be financial resources for people who want to do this kind of work, but don’t have the resources themselves, as well.
Political decisions have to be made for the society, for the city itself and on how people’s lives can be improved. This way you strengthen the cultural scenes as well.
How could Hannover help to strengthen Hannover’s cultural scene?
You could simply answer, “funding money and the likes is the way to go.” But in such processes you have to work on the structure first. Because only then you can make a change and for me that begins with making Hannover a safe haven and thus making it more diverse. That everyone in Hannover has a place to stay and to be creative in, that they can be educated in Hannover and so forth. This is what strengthens the cultural scene in the long run. Culture is something we do. That is social practice. And social practice also means political practice. Political decisions have to be made for the society, for the city itself and on how people’s lives can be improved. This way you strengthen the cultural scenes as well
So culture does not exist just by itself, it includes social integration etc. as well?
Yes. Culture is not something isolated. The walk to the supermarket is part of culture for me. Art gives the artists the possibility to talk about or deal with something that is important to them, or to have the audience deal with this topic. Culture is a form of communication, in another, non-linear way.
What comes to mind when you think of Hannover as Capital of Culture?
Ambitions. And...I’ll just leave it at that (laughs).
